June 27, 1994 Dear Friends: As you know, a recent unique event joined together the people and the history of the State of Bulgaria, the United States of America, and the State of Israel. The Jewish National Fund honored the people of Bulgaria and their King, Boris III, and the roles they played in saving Bulgaria's Jewish community during World War II. On May 23, 1994, King Simeon II accepted the Jewish National Fund's coveted Legion of Honor award on behalf of the people of Bulgaria and his late father for their acts of heroism during the blackest years of modern history. Proceeds from this event will establish a forest in Israel, honoring the Bulgarian citizens and their late King who, somehow, rose above the tide of persecution during World War II at a time when the Nazi machinery aimed for no less than total annihilation of European Jewry. Bulgaria became the only nation in Europe whose Jewish population was left untouched - indeed, by the end of the war, Bulgarian Jewry had increased in number. To a very great extent, the survival of Bulgaria's 48,000 Jews can be attributed to the decisive measures taken by these courageous people. Please join us and make your contribution to the forest honoring the people of Bulgaria and the late King. Your entire contribution will go towards planting trees in their memory. For your convenience we have enclosed a response envelope that allows you to make a gift at any level. We are hopeful that you will contribute at the highest level possible as thousands of people will benefit directly from your generosity and support toward the establishment of this commemorative forest. Should you have any questions, please contact the Jewish National Fund at 213-964-1400. We look forward to your favorable response to help us acknowledge this rare triumph of good over evil. With sincere appreciation,
