About our Society

The Bulgarian-Greek Society "Otets Paisij" was founded in 1984. Our members are Bulgarians living in Greece and Greek friends of Bulgaria, most of them having active contacts with the country. I hope that you like our emblem, designed by a member of our Society.

We meet every Friday evening in the Society club - Loukianou 6, Kolonaki, Athens. The club premises have been kindly provided by the Bulgarian Embassy in 1993, during the mandate of the ambassador Prof. B. Bogdanov. We are regularly supplied with Bulgarian newspapers by the Agency of the Bulgarians Abroad. The Society members donate tapes with Bulgarian music, posters, albums e.a. printed materials, while some of them prefer to deliver rather short-term consumables like grozdova rakija and domashna tourshija. We are very glad to see in the club Bulgarian guests, visiting Greece for a short or longer period.

Most of the Fridays we meet just to see each other and to have some drink. In addition, we organize special evenings to celebrate March 3, March 25 (the Greek National Day), May 24, June 2, Christmas/ New Year e.a., to meet some eminent guests from Bulgaria or to provide information about important events like the elections of last December. One of our major goals is the promotion of the contacts between Greek and Bulgarian people. A concert of a mixed Greek-Bulgarian quartet was organised last year and a new one will take place soon, where artists from the Sofia State Opera will present songs of the Greek composer P. Triantafillidis.

We are political pluralists. There are often warm political discussions in the club, but the Society is one for ALL the Bulgarians and their Greek friends. We believe that the political parties have to be servants of the people and not the opposite.

About me and my Institute

I am a nuclear physicist, working in the field of radiation protection of the population. I was a staff member of the Faculty of Physics, Sofia University between 1969-1982. Currently I am leading the Environmental Radioactivity Laboratory, a unit of the Nuclear Technology Dep. of NRCPS 'Demokritos'. The research of ERL is related mainly to the natural radioactivity (e.g. indoor radon), but we are also responsible for the routine control of the radioactivity in the Greek environment. 'Demokritos' is the major research center in Greece (700 employers). Its activities are comparable with those of the INRNE, BAS (Sofia, osmi kilometer). Amongst others, 'D' is operating the National Academic and Research Computer Network of Greece (since 1984) and the largest scientific library in the country .

I am an elected Secretary of the Otets Paisij Society from 1993. The finances of the Society are very restricted. We have not an e-mail box, not even a fax. I am trying now to collect some e-mail addresses of our members - especially of Bulgarian origin - to include them in this page. A W3-page of my Laboratory is under preparation. It will provide information related to Radiation Protection, Environmental Radioactivity, Nuclear Accidents etc., but I plan to include also a page with Bulgarian addresses and URLs in order to promote the contacts between my local colleagues and Bulgarian scientists. Till then I will be very glad to establish contacts with Bulgarian Net people through e-mail.
