Ancient Findings
Ancient Civilisations have left numerous remains on the territory of Republic of Macedonia.
The important archeological site at Trebenishte, not far from Ohrid, has
yielded rich finds from princely graves, among them this lovely gold
portrait mask (4th c. BC), showing the influence of Mycenean culture.

Orthodox Icons
The world-famous icon collection in the Ohrid church of St. Clement comprises
some thirty medieval icons, the oldest from the 12th century. The collection is
the property of the National Museum in Ohrid.

Iconostasis
The 19th-century iconostasis of the church of the Holi Saviour (Sveti Spas)
in Skopje, carved in walnut, combines a profusion of plant and animal motifs
with the figures of saints in local costumes. This realistic high-relief
carving is the work of skilful craftsmen of the Debar area, who included
their own figures in one corner of the iconostasis.

St. John the Divine Church
The church of St. John the Divine at Kaneo was built and decorated with
frescoes in the 13th century. Standing on a bluff, in one of the loveliest
spots on the shore of Lake Ohrid, it is a harmonious structure, cruciform in
plan, with a decorative facade and dome. The unknown architect seems to have
been influenced by Armenian churches in designing the octagonal dome with its
ribbed triangular arcading.

Town of Ohrid
Some well-preserved houses in the picturesque local architectural style
can be seen in the town of Ohrid. Built in the 19th century, these dwellings hang
over the street, each successive story projecting further than the one below.

The river Crni Drim rises close to the
Macedonian-Albanian border, near
the monastery of St. Naum (16th-17th c.),
some 30 km from the town of Ohrid.
Only a few meters further on it flows into Lake Ohrid, from which it
emerges on the other end of the lake to flow through the little town of
Struga.

Struga
Struga represents another well-known Macedonian tourist center
besides Ohrid. Located on the shores of Lake Ohrid and Crni
Drim river, Struga is host to poets from all over the world
in the end of each August when Struga Poetry Nights festival is
held.

Lake Dojran
Dojran is the third largest lake in the Republic of Macedonia,
but it is the richest one in fish. Even today the traditional
way of fishing using specially trained birds - cormorants
is widely practiced. This manner of fishing could be traced back
in time to ancient Peonians, who raised their pile dwellings here.

Bitola
Bitola, the second largest town in the Republic of Macedonia,
is situated in the extreme South, close to the border with
Greece. It lies
at the foot of Mt. Pelister (a national Park), in the Pelagonian region,
Macedonia's granary.

Heraclea
Close to the town of Bitola are the ruins of ancient Heraclea
Lyncestis (founded by Philip II of Macedonia in 4th c. BC), on the famous
Roman road, the Via Egnatia, linking Rome with Salonika via southern Italy
and Albania.

Krushevo
Krushevo is the highest town in the Republic of Macedonia, with
its altitude of over 1300 m (about 4000 ft) above the sea level.
It is a well-known winter ski resort.
Its old architecture, many hotels, and all conditions necessary for
pleasant winter holidays, make Krushevo an ideal place for
relaxation.

Traditional Balcony
Flower-growing has a long tradition in the region. There are few village
gardens or town balconies without a colorful display of flowers and ornamental
plants.

Macedonian Tobacco
Tobacco is one of the traditional crops which flourishes in the Macedonian
climate. Noted for its high quality, Macedonian tobacco, of oriental type
is exported in large quantities as well as being processed in local factories.
It is the main cash crop in many small holdings.

Traditional Costumes
For family celebrations, church festivals and on other special occasions villagers
bring out their attractive traditional costumes, carefully kept in wooden
chests and smelling of sweet basil, the local substitute for lavender.

Kolo Dance
The Macedonian "kolo" dance is noted for its vivacity and complex steps calling
for considerable skill and grace. Accompanied by the national instrument, the
zurla, and drums, it begins slowly and gradually gains pace to reach a breathless
climax.

Kratovo
Kratovo is a small and very picturesque town in the Eastern
part of the Republic of Macedonia. Together with Veles, Krushevo and
Ohrid, here the traditional old Macedonian architecture is
in its full bloom.

Old Bridge over Vardar in Skopje
The stone bridge over the Vardar gives access to the old part of the city of Skopje
with its many cultural and historical monuments. Built by the Turks on the site of a
Roman bridge, it has eleven arches and bears a plaque in middle stating that it was
restored by Sultan Murat II (first half of the 15th century).

New Residential Quarters in Skopje
Skopje was struck by a devistating earthquake in 1963. Some of the houses
built immediately after the tragic event are shown in the forefront
(in the first picture).
Skopje was rebuilt since then and the new residential quarters bear
little resemblance with old Skopje (second picture).
