         LETTER OF CONDOLENCES FROM THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF NATO
                            TO MRS. TURGUT OZAL


On behalf of the North Atlantic Council and himself, the Secretary General of
NATO, Mr. Manfred Worner, extended sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to
Mrs. Turgut Ozal on the death of President Turgut Ozal.  In his letter to
Mrs. Ozal, he said:

  "During these crucial times President Ozal proved to be a great leader
  and will be sadly missed, not only by Turkey, but by Europe and the world
  as a whole."

Mr. Worner emphasized the great political skill which had won for President Ozal
and for Turkey the great respect that they command in the Alliance. The
Secretary General of NATO expressed, in particular, his admiration for
President  Ozal's firm commitment and unwavering loyalty to the North Atlantic
Alliance.
