The first wins for the Republic of Macedonia in wrestling
Vlado Sokolov (48kg) and Shaban Tr`stena (57kg) became the first free style
wrestlers from the Republic of Macedonia to
win a bout at the Olympic games. While Sokolov lost in the first
round to Vitalii Railean (Moldova), he won in the
first consolation round by technical superiority against
Jose Manuel Restrepo Gonzalez of Colombia (15-4).
Eventually, though Vlado Sokolov was eliminated from the
tournament after loosing to Gheorghe Corduneanu of Romania by points
in the second consolation round.
Tr`stena won his first match against Alejandro Puerto Diaz
from Cuba by points. He then continued undefeated to win in
the quarter-finals against Aleksandr Guzov (Belarus), again by points.
